Bird & Nature Walks

Bring your binoculars and bird book. There will be some to borrow. Expert birders will lead you on a guided birding hike through the trails of the Great Trinity Forest.

Landscape Photography: Cover techniques used to capture the beauty of nature. Consider composition, exposure and framing in taking better pictures of wildlife, flowers and landscapes. Look at the depth of field to emphasize photo elements. Learn to work with natural light and when to shoot the best photos. Jim Jones will give a long asked for presentation to share his knowledge about the equipment selection available to enhance our bird watching experience. The discussion will include optics (binoculars and spotting scopes), photography (DSLRs and digi-scoping), audio (recorders and hearing-enhancement), and digital bird identification resources (desktop/smartphone software and on-line). Jim asks that our more experienced members take part by sharing what works for them. Bring in your favorite optics to allow others to sample.

Learn more about the many species of birds that call Dallas White Rock Lake Park home. A wonderful primer on bird species, birding hot spots, and migration. Environmental advocate and wildlife photographer Ben Sandifer is the speaker.

Learn about creatures of the night (moths/owls) at this family-friendly event. We will attract and identify moths, investigate owl pellets, and offer nature crafts and games. Our nature store will be open for shopping.  Registration required. $5.

Come for the stars but stay for a live telling of The Legend of the Tandy Hills Witchey Tree. Come sit around the campfire with a cup of hot chocolate and hear the grisly tale come to life. Peggy and Gene of, Twice Upon a Time Storytellers, will astound you with their storytelling skills. You will be richly rewarded.

Trek to LLELA’s prairie restoration area to view the wonders of the night sky. Emphasis is on viewing with naked-eyes and binoculars. Ages 5 and up.

Explore techniques to photograph wildlife from your backyard to the parks and beyond. Capture birds in flight and get tack sharp images. Explore ways to locate and approach wildlife. Demystify the use of manual mode and explore a choice of photography equipment. Conclude with some simple post processing techniques. 

Workshops are taught by David Hamblet. Register in advance. $15.
