Sierra Club Day Hike - Ft Worth

Meet at the Hardwicke Interpretative Visitors Center parking lot at Fort Worth Nature Center. After you enter the refuge pay your entrance fee and follow signs to Hardwicke. We will hike a 4-5 mile section of trails. Bring water, snacks, and raingear. Nature Center is located in NW Tarrant County on Lake Worth. Take Highway 199 exit west toward Azle off 820 West on western edge of Fort Worth. Leader: Claudia Blalock, 817-924-6242. For more information on Nature Center, visit www.fwnaturecenter.org. In the event of rain, hike is cancelled. No dogs please.

Children's Holiday Workshop: Winter Wildlife Treats - McKinney

Ages: 5–12 year olds

Cost: $30/child per class; sibling discount $25/each sibling per class

Please dress your student adventurer in long pants,
closed toe shoes and jacket or coat as needed.

All decoration materials are included.
A light animal cracker snack will be provided.

Winter Wildlife Treats: Kids will create healthy, fun, food items that are safe to feed our local animals and birds in the winter. A live animal ambassador will come to visit with the kids. A nature hike on our beautiful sanctuary will highlight the needs of animals in winter.

Description: Join us for a field trip on foot at one of Dallas' prime birding locations. Beginners welcome! Binoculars are necessary for this outing.
Approximately 2 to 3 hours

Bird & Nature Walk - Athens

Join us on our monthly bird watching outing during one of the best birding times of the year.  Expect to see 25 or more different species as we explore our Interpretive Wetland Trail and other areas of the hatchery.  Bring binoculars and field guide if you have them (not required).

Regular admission is $5.50 for adults, $4.50 for seniors 65 and older, and $3.50 for children ages 4 through 12. Pets are not allowed on TFFC grounds.

Guided Trinity River Canoe Expedition - Dallas

December 10 -   West Fork, Hwy. 157 to Hwy. 360, 7 miles, River Legacy park, proximity of Bird's Fort site, Woodbine sandstone, seldom paddled, difficult access.

 In addition to seeing the beauty (and sometimes the lack of same) of the river, veteran canoe guide Charles Allen will point out American Indian sites and other historical artifacts as you paddle. From 8:30 am until mid-afternoon. $45 payable when reservation made.

Meeting time for all trips is 8:30 a.m. River conditions can change quickly; scheduled trip locations may be changed to find the best boating conditions. All guided trips must be paid in advance . Cancellations 30 days or less before the trip date are not refundable. Trips are held rain or shine - there are no rain checks or weather related refunds.

Birding Trip to Mad Island

In February we have a trip planned to visit Mad Island Wildlife Management Area being led by TPWD's Brent Ortego. Mad Island has, for many years, held the nationwide record for most number of bird species seen during Christmas Bird Counts. Tours of the island are made by special reservations and we will be visiting on Saturday, February 25th.

Additionally, this weekend coincides with the Port Aransas Whooping Crane Festival. I will need to know how many people will be participating in this trip as soon as possible so I can reserve motel rooms and get us a spot on one of the boat tours to see the cranes. 

This trip will be limited to 12 participants and FWAS Chapter Only members will get first priority. Please email me as soon as possible to reserve your spot on this trip.
 

Search for Henslow's Sparrow - Nacogdoches

Please join us on a search for the elusive Henslow’s Sparrow that spends its winters in East Texas. We will be led by David and Mimi Wolf. Both David and Mimi have led tours for Victor Emanuel Nature Tours, and Mimi is an accomplished artist who has illustrated several bird books and has designed
t-shirts for many birding events in Texas, so we’ll be in the best of company! We’ll also see what other birds spend their winters in East Texas. 

We will travel to Nacogdoches on Friday afternoon birding along the way and meet with our leaders Saturday morning. If we don’t find our target bird on Saturday we’ll try again Sunday morning before heading back to the Metroplex.

Hotel accommodations have not yet been secured so more information will be posted on the FWAS website in the near future. This trip will be limited to 12 participants with FWAS Chapter-only members getting first priority.

Lake Grapevine Birding Trip - Southlake

Birding Field Trip with Ft Worth Audubon Society Members...

Leader: Ray Chancellor

Description: Ray will lead us on a nature walk along Walnut Grove and Bob Jones Parks. Waterfowl and wintering sparrows will be our focus. This ½ day trip will start at Walnut Grove Park. There will be lots of walking on uneven terrain.

Directions: From Hwy 114 in Southlake exit White Chapel Blvd. and travel north approximately 3 miles until the road dead-ends into a gravel parking lot. We’ll meet Ray at 8:30 AM.

Misc - Please dress appropriately for the weather conditions on the day of the trip. Sturdy shoes, sun and bug protection and water and snacks are all recommended.

Wilderness Navigation Class - Dallas

Learn the fundamentals of finding your way in the wilderness in this two evening class. Among the subjects covered are: purchasing maps, how to read maps, how not to get lost, what to do if you do get lost, GPS, different kinds of compasses, and how to use your compass. If you have a compass, bring it to the class. If you don't have one, we will show you what to look for when you purchase one. The class will be held at the Dallas REI store (second floor program room). 4515 LBJ Freeway, north side, between Midway and Welch. This two-night class will start promptly each night at 6:30 PM and will finish at about 8:45 PM. The fee for the class is $15 for Sierra Club members and $20 for non-members (CASH or CHECK ONLY).
