Native Prairies Association of Texas, Fort Worth Chapter: Why Do Prairies Matter - Fort Worth

Presenter is Dr. Ken Steigman, director of the Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area, a 2,600-acre preserve managed by a non-profit consortium headed by The University of North Texas. LLELA's mission is to preserve and restore native ecosystems and biodiversity of north Texas and to provide and promote environmental education and research. Dr. Steigman has 36 years of experience in working with the public to participate and enjoy restoring and managing native ecosystems.

The native grassland communities of North Central Texas were historically dominated by tallgrasses along with a diverse community of subdominant midgrasses, shortgrasses and wildflowers in a complex mosaic of vegetation. In recent decades, an alarming amount of native plant communities in our region have been replaced by development, cropland, intensively managed monocultures of introduced grass species, and/or invasive grasses.

Escape to the “wild” side- spend an evening with the FWAS viewing some great wildlife and bird photography submitted by our globe-trotting membership. The annual membership “slide show” features pictures and videos of great birds, wildlife, landscapes and adventures from the past year whether it is from our back yard or far away.

Presentation by Lynda Harvey, a Denton County Master Gardener and member of the Trinity Forks NPSOT chapter. “Plant This, Not That” analyzes multiple factors to create a sustainable garden in North Texas. The objective is to design a residential landscape that is appealing, suitable, economic and responsible, where plants can serve a functional purpose in additional to their aesthetic benefits.

Native Prairies Association of Texas, Fort Worth Chapter: Stella Rowan Hike - Fort Worth

Guided wildflower walk at Stella Rowan Prairie, located on the grounds of Tarrant County Resource Connection. We will gather at 5:45 pm to sign Liability Release Forms, and begin the walk at 6 pm, concluding about 15 minutes before dusk. Be sure to wear appropriate clothing: long pants, closed toe shoes, etc.  Please bring your own water bottle. Watch Facebook and the website for details on where to park and meet everyone.
