Bird & Nature Walks

Learn about Big Bend National Park’s birding opportunities, wildlife and scenic vistas. Charlie Amos, FWAS member and past president, master naturalist (Cross Timbers Chapter of Master Naturalists), River Legacy Living Science Center volunteer nature walk leader and native Texan, will provide insights on one of his favorite birding and wildlife viewing destinations, Big Bend National Park. Spend an evening with FWAS enjoying a magical place here in Texas where the night skies are dark as coal, rivers carve temple-like canyons in ancient limestone and hundreds of bird species take

Four-hour, six-mile hike. Bring a light lunch, snacks and water. No pets or kids. Hike to be canceled if it is raining/lightening and/or rain predictions exceed 40 percent. See website for more details.

Go on a guided hike led by a River Legacy Naturalist to explore the flora and fauna of River Legacy Parks at 11:30 am, 1:30 pm or 3:30 pm. Hike will be followed by a craft or activity. Register for an available time slot beginning at 9 a.m. the day of the event. Cost is $2 per person. Recommended for children 2 and up with a responsible adult. Info: 817-860-6752.

Nature walk on Penn Farm at 11 a.m. to noon and 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Time once again to test your mettle! Our goal is to hike border-to border-to-border-to-border, tracing the steel cable that defines the 160-acre boundary of Tandy Hills Natural Area.

As the trees have dropped their leaves, many forms of wildlife have little cover to hide. Hike the Refuge in search of wildlife that may not be concealed very well.

Get a head start and put feet to a resolution, literally, by getting active and hiking with us. Along with a health walk, learn about the natural world with our skilled naturalist. 

During the week of Dec. 26-30 and Jan. 2-6 2017, FWNC will have activities for families such as Bison Feeding Hayrides, guided hikes and crafts. Call for details.

Sara Beasley, Center Director for Mitchell Lake Audubon Center in San Antonio, will give creative tips and tricks that will make your experience teaching children about birds and wildlife a little easier and more fun!  

Celebrate the holiday season in the same style that Texas families did 150 years ago. Visitors can enjoy a tour of the historic Minor-Porter Log House (built in the 1860s), make a corn husk doll or ornament, learn how to churn butter, create a hand-dipped candle and enjoy traditional holiday music. A cup of hot cider and some Dutch oven gingerbread help fill out the celebration. Visitors are welcome to participate in the come-and-go event at their own pace. Knowledgeable volunteers will help guide visitors through the historic structures and grounds.
