Trees plagued by mistletoe need extra love

You may have noticed it as the trees start to lose their leaves, when it’s more visible. Hidden during summer, the growths look like small, lime green shrubs with waxy white berries. It’s mistletoe, a reminder of Christmas, festive decorations and the quaint tradition of kissing unsuspecting bystanders.

An Arlington resident wants to entice residents to ditch the Black Friday sales and tear the kids away from their video games and go outside next Friday, Nov. 23, for a Nature Crawl.

Jim Domke, a former photo editor and writer for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, aims to introduce folks to four nature parks he describes as hidden gems in Arlington.

Dallas community gardens fulfill 'promise' made decade ago

Promise of Peace Gardens, a Dallas nonprofit teaching children the value of nutrition and community, operates gardens in food deserts, providing fresh produce and education. Ed Lowe’s paddle went all over the Brazos as he fought for the river he loved with an overwhelming passion, following the aquatic trails of Texas author John Graves whose words charged him with a cause: Speak up for rivers. Lowe’s paddle joined Graves’ nearly thirty years ago in a tandem canoe as together they paddled the challenging Lower Pecos River’s whitewaters.

With a population of 7,493, Lucas is small compared to nearby urban hubs like Plano and Dallas. But when it comes to recycling, Lucas is taking some big steps. Thanks to some dedicated volunteers, Lucas is one of the first North Texas cities to have its own styrofoam recycling drop-off.

That's a 180-turn from last year, when the city of Lucas announced it was going to end curbside recycling.

An edible landscape shelters the front of Peggy Ploss’s duplex in Addison, an upscale North Dallas suburb. 

Plants are tucked under closely packed trees, vining skyward, filling raised beds, spreading underfoot, spilling down to the curb – on a street of manicured lawns and pruned shrubs.

There’s not a blade of lawn grass to be found.
