Irving couple brings eco-friendly laundry soap biz to Texas

Irving resident Michael Tenney, coowner of NearBayou Naturals, is not only carrying on his family's eco-friendly business, he helped create it. Back in 2008, Tenney’s mother Cynthia of Iowa was cloth diapering most of her children and found that their skin was reacting to a chemical found in synthetic laundry detergents.

In November, the city of Mansfield joined a growing number of North Texas cities making it easier for residents to dispose of household hazardous waste when the city debuted its new Environmental Collection Center as part of its annual Fall Beautification Day.

Recycling agricultural plastic is growing industry

Plastic has become ever present in our culture and dealing with the nonbiodegradable material when we’re done with it has become a challenge. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, about 32 million tons of plastic waste were generated in the United States in 2012.

IKEA recently announced it was opening a second store in North Texas and according to a company spokesperson, the super-sized housewares and furniture outlet will be as green as its other Texas venues.    

The company founded in Sweden in 1943 has become known for its simple eco-friendly minimalist style and has a long-term goal to power all of its facilities using 100 percent renewable energy.

The Texas Veggie Fair aims to show folks there’s a lot more to a plant-based diet than salads. Attendees will find all their favorite comfort foods prepared vegetarian style at the annual fest. For vegans and vegetarians, it’s a plant-based Disneyland, where the vegan cheese fries, corn dogs and cupcakes flow.
