Enjoy an old-fashioned hayride to the bison range where you will get to see the bison up close and personal as staff assist in feeding them range cubes. We will visit the hay barn where you can learn about our bison management practices. During the entire hayride, we will discuss the habitats represented at the Nature Center as well. Meet at the Hardwicke Interpretive Center.

Tours are from 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. & 1 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Energize for your Spring Break activities with a peaceful hike through forest in search of the early blooming native Wild Plum trees. As we hike through the thicket of Wild Plums, we may encounter along the way sights of White-tailed Deer, rummaging armadillos and sluggish reptiles. Dress for the weather and bring plenty of water.

You’ve got a few local weekend backpacks under your belt; now you want to do more: a fly-drive or multi-night outing, or even try a cold weather trip. This class will cover advanced backpacking tips and skills including winter camping, fly-drive planning and equipment, bear barrel packing, and week-long trekking.

Location: upstairs clinic room at Dallas REI, 4515 LBJ Freeway, Farmers Branch, TX 75244 (north side of LBJ between Midway and Welch).

This class will start promptly at 6:30 PM and finish about 8:45 PM.

The fee for the class is $15 for Sierra Club members and $20 for non-members

Everyone loves the cheery sounds of birds in the garden. Join Dan Coletti, owner of Just Natural Design, as he shows you how to attract these beautiful guests into your garden. Find out which plants are must-haves in the garden, how to provide food and shelter, what type of birds you can expect to see in our area and more. After this class, the birds in your yard will forget about migrating and want to call your garden home.

From singing to swimming, from incredible powers of sight and hearing to the extraordinary ability to soar through the sky, birds are amazing.  But how do they achieve these incredible feats? Join us for a closer look at the bird body and the physical adaptations that allow birds to migrate great distances, navigate through the night sky, and return to the same wintering and breeding grounds each year.  Study beaks and feet and their connections to diet and levels of mobility. Take a closer look at the bird eye and its powers of sight. Examine feather structure and the properties of flight that make birds some of the most beautiful things in nature.  Gain a deeper understanding of how adaptations help a bird survive in its ecosystem and affect its conservation status.

Join experts from Audubon Texas and around the metroplex as they introduce you to the wonderful world of birds. During these fun classes you will explore the birds of the Arboretum and the new Dogwood Canyon. Audubon Texas is a wonderful resource in Dallas and we are pleased to have them share their expertise with you.

Few things are as interesting, lively and beautiful as birds.  In this two part class, Dr. Tania Homayoun, will introduce you to the birds that call the Arboretum and Dogwood Canyon home. Tania will show you how to identify and keep track of the birds you see, how to use your binoculars and how to recognize different birds by their call. Following the lecture on the first week of class, you will stroll through the Arboretum in search for the many birds that reside in the White Rock Lake area.  During the second week of class, Tania will take you on a birding walk to explore the wonderful trails at Dogwood Canyon. Be sure to bring your binoculars and dress for the weather. 

Bring your bike, your kids, and your friends on either the 8-, 20-, or 30- mile bike tour this saturday, with Pizaa Patron providing finish line refreshments. Benefitting Spokes for Folks, this annual event is more about finishing with friends than finishing first, and provides an excellent opportunity to appreciate the beauty of White Rock Lake during the spring.

The second Saturday of every month is Second Saturday Shoreline Spruce-Up at White Rock Lake Park. Join the clean-up effort put on by For the Love of the Lake and our Adopt-A-Shoreline groups, never missing a month since April 1996!

Newcomers are welcomed and all meet between 8 to 9 a.m. at the FTLOTL office in Casa Linda Plaza, Buckner & Garland Road (facing Buckner). Come on out nice and early on Second Saturdays, have some refreshments, get some exercise, meet a great group of folks (if we do say so ourselves), and help us keep the shores of White Rock Lake clean and sparkling! Fort Worth Prairie Fest is the annual fundraiser for Friends of Tandy Hills Natural Area. Learn more about how funds are plowed back into Tandy Hills HERE.

Prairie Fest grew from a small neighborhood event in 2006 to become the “Best Outdoor Cultural Event in 2010”, according to the Fort Worth Weekly. By 2011, Prairie Fest had attracted hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of visitors to Tandy Hills.

For 2012, Prairie Fest has been re-imagined and re-focused back to discovery and enjoyment of Tandy Hills, itself. Instead of a single event, there will be three festivals throughout the Spring on the last Saturdays of March, April and May. Event hours will be from 4 PM - Dusk.
