NOTE: It is very important that you RSVP for each trip where it is required.

Scheduled field trips may be cancelled due to weather or for other reasons, at the discretion of the field trip leader. Notice of last minute changes will be posted, if possible, on the Late-Breaking News forum of the "Bird Talk" page. Be on time because trips will depart at the "meeting" time. Most field trips are free and open to everyone, beginners to veteran birders, however some may have an associated fee which will be indicated. Be sure to dress for the weather and conditions, bring food and drinks as indicated, and be prepared with insect repellent, sun block, and a hat. At press time, possible additional field trips are still in development, so please check the Field Trips page on the website regularly for updates.


 

Buffalo Boogie - 5k Walk/ Fun Run/ Competitive Run - Fort Worth

 
Buffalo Boogie is the major fundraising event for the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge. It is a 1 mile/5K walk and fun-run for individuals, families, groups, schools, and pets plus a 5K competitive run. The route is shady, quiet, and baby-stroller friendly. The event in 2011 had over 1000 participants who enjoyed live country music, entertaining and educational games, face-painting, clowns, balloon artists, exhibits, and lots of good food.

How Birds Work

Join our monthly FREE Third Thursday event. 

We’ll have guided hikes and animal encounters throughout the day.  Evening activities include: Special guest speaker,Dr. Patty McGill, director of Dogwood Canyon and Trinity River Audubon Centers presenting How Birds Work at 7PM.  

From singing to swimming, from incredible powers of sight and hearing to the extraordinary ability to soar through the sky, birds are amazing.  But how do they achieve these incredible feats? Join us for a closer look at the bird body and the physical adaptations that allow birds to migrate great distances, navigate through the night sky, and return to the same wintering and breeding grounds each year.  

 At 8PM accompany Audubon Texas, Director of Education, Ben Jones, into the Great Trinity Forest on an Owl Prowl. 

Cedar Ridge Preserve Hike-a-Thon - Dallas

May 5 (Sat) Cedar Ridge Preserve Hike-a-Thon

The Hike-a-Thon is a fundraiser to raise money for improvements at Cedar Ridge Preserve. In addition to hiking, The Preserve will host several informational booths. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. Of course, The Preserve will be open to non-participants, but we encourage you to help the preserve and join in the fun. Registration is $20 per person, $5 per child (6-12). Cash only. Full details here.

Prairie Fest - Fort Worth

Fort Worth Prairie Fest is the annual fundraiser for Friends of Tandy Hills Natural Area. Learn more about how funds are plowed back into Tandy Hills HERE.

Prairie Fest grew from a small neighborhood event in 2006 to become the “Best Outdoor Cultural Event in 2010”, according to the Fort Worth Weekly. By 2011, Prairie Fest had attracted hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of visitors to Tandy Hills.

A re-imagined festival is taking flight in 2012

For 2012, Prairie Fest has been re-imagined and re-focused back to discovery and enjoyment of Tandy Hills, itself. Instead of a single event, there will be three festivalsthroughout the Spring on the last Saturdays of March, April and May. Event hours will be from 4 PM - Dusk. We call it Prairie Festx3.

Located 16 miles south of downtown Dallas in Cedar Hill, Dogwood Canyon is part of the White Rock Escarpment. Nowhere in North Texas can one find a greater variety of rare species than in Dogwood Canyon. Plants and animals from east, west and central Texas converge here, making the Canyon the only place in the world where one can find the Black-chinned Hummingbird of west Texas nesting in the flowering dogwood tree of east Texas.

Native Plant Walk at Southwest Nature Preserve, Arlington

Master Naturalists Jan Miller and Jim Varnum announde they will be conducting a native plant walk at Arlington's Southwest Nature Preserve on Saturday, April 21 at 2:00 PM.  Southwest Nature Preserve is a 60-acre natural area with forest, meadows, sandstone outcrops and a lake.  Consider it an oasis of natural-ness in the DFW Metroplex.

We might see Common woodisa fern (Woodsia obtusa), Engelmann's Adder's-Tongue fern Ophioglossum engelmannii), Butterfly weed (milkweed) (Asclepias tuberosa subsp), Whorled milkweed (Asclepias verticillata), Common least aster (Chaetopappa asteroides), Sicklepod (Arabis canadensis), Farkle-berry (Vaccinium arboreum), Bottle brush (Plantago aristata), Flameflower (Talinum sp.), Texas toadflax (Nuttallanthus texanus), Glen Rose yucca (Yucca necopina).  It's a Rare plant of Texas!  And many others.

This year, the Trinity Commons Foundation begins an exciting new project to learn about the Trinity's birds – the Trinity Bird Count. With 636 of the 957 bird species in North America, Texas is for the birds! Come enjoy the Trinity and help investigate the birds that live along the Trinity or that visit here during their migration.
