Life on the Prairie, Prairie Invertebrates: Last week we discussed vertebrates, this week we will discuss invertebrates of the prairie.
Prairie invertebrates are numerous and we have an opportunity to identify as many as we can and discuss their role in the prairie. Part 6 of the Life on the Prairie series.

Life on the Prairie, Prairie Vertebrates: Animals of the prairie such as bison and White-tailed Deer can be seen at the Nature Center.
We will discuss some of these vertebrates and we will take off to find as many of these animals and/or signs of these animals as we can.

National Trails Day ®: The first Saturday of June is National Trails Day.
Come out to the Nature Center and make your mark on our trails. Start the morning volunteering with Natural Guard improving our trails.
Natural Guard: Individuals can help keep the Nature Center beautiful by volunteering for Natural Guard. Volunteers assist Refuge staff in trail maintenance, brush clearing, bridge building and much more.
For all Natural Guard volunteers, join us for a hike along the Canyon Ridge Trail and learn about the CCC’s contribution to the Nature Center.
Natural Guard is from 9 am - 12pm.
CCC Hike is from 1 - 4 p.m.

Paddlers of all skill levels are invited to join LLELA’s certified kayaking instructors as we explore the Beaver Pond Paddling Trail. No prior kayaking experience is necessary. The Beaver Pond is a wildlife magnet, and there will be great opportunities to view herons, ducks, turtles, frogs, and other wildlife species. After basic kayaking and safety instruction, we’ll travel together about one mile through shady willow thickets, open water, and floating rafts of water lilies and other aquatic vegetation.
The activity is limited to 10 paddlers, ages 7 years and up. Kayaks, paddles, and PFDs are provided. The fee is $7 per paddler, in addition to LLELA’s regular admission fee of $5/person. Registration is required at 972-219-3930 or lisacole@unt.edu.
Night Hike

at the Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area
We may hear some bumps in the night, but have no fear...it’s probably just an armadillo. Follow our trail guides on a moonlit stroll down the Redbud Trail. Coyotes howling, owls hooting, and other nocturnal sounds will provide an out-of-the-ordinary hiking experience.
No flashlights are necessary. Ages 5 years and up.
The hike will be rescheduled in the event of rain. Registration required at 972-219-3930 or lisacole@unt.edu.
The hike is $7 per person, or $2/person for LLELA season pass holders.

Located 16 miles south of downtown Dallas in Cedar Hill, Dogwood Canyon is part of the White Rock Escarpment. Nowhere in North Texas can one find a greater variety of rare species than in Dogwood Canyon. Plants and animals from east, west and central Texas converge here, making the Canyon the only place in the world where one can find the Black-chinned Hummingbird of west Texas nesting in the flowering dogwood tree of east Texas.
Evening Stroll With a Naturalist: Come and enjoy an evening stroll on the Nature Center’s trails as we explore nature before nightfall.
Evening provides a unique opportunity to view animals that make the Nature Center home. Bring water and wear weather appropriate clothing.
