Year in Review: North Texas greenies persisted in 2017

2017 was a challenging year for environmentalists. It started with the inauguration of a fossil-fuel loving President who immediately began rolling back environmentalists' gains. However, the set-backs only inspired North Texas greenies to push their eco-friendly agendas in creative ways.

Dallas pipeline protestor to be honored at Peacemaker awards

Dallas-based activist Yolonda Blue Horse, known for her environmental and indigenous rights activism, will receive the Justice Seeker of the Year award at the 2017 Peacemaker Awards Banquet on Nov. 30. Her efforts include founding the Society of Native Nations and leading protests against pipelines threatening tribal lands.

'Awake' screening captures power of Native American resistance

Green Source DFW and the Memnosyne Institute screened 'Awake', a documentary about the Standing Rock protest, highlighting the reawakening of Native American pride. The film and an accompanying panel emphasized divesting from fossil fuel supporters, reclaiming power, and decolonizing language for sustained resistance.

A statewide nonprofit called Scenic Texas is working to ensure that the natural beauty along the state’s roadways is preserved.

Dallas doc backs protest of Texas A&M dog experiments

PETA activists disrupted a Texas A&M meeting, demanding an end to dog experiments, arguing their futility for human muscular dystrophy treatments. Dr. John J. Pippin emphasized ethical concerns and proposed alternative research methods, with support from scientists, public figures, and MD patients opposing the university's animal testing practices.

Finalists announced for the 2017 Green Source DFW Sustainable Leadership Awards

We had a great turnout for the Green Source DFW Sustainable Leadership Awards Voting! Nearly 4,500 ballots were cast online. Now that the contest has been narrowed to the top three finalists in each category, a panel of judges selected from the North Texas green community will decide the final winners.

Tyson Foods’ meats and poultry, familiar in kitchens across Texas, the U.S. and abroad, are enormous sellers – $36 billion in 2016. However, the environmental fallout from Tyson, its top competitors and their supply chains of feed growers and animal-raising operators is also gigantic – in Texas, as well as in the Cornbelt.

Education centers to be bright spots of 2017 DFW Solar Tour
