City of Flower Mound: Birding 101 - Flower Mound

Learn how to get started in the fascinating hobby of bird watching! Lifelong birder and Texas master naturalist Scott Kiester will present “Birding 101.” Scott will cover birding basics including how to identify birds, where to find them, birding etiquette and buying and using binoculars and field guides. 

Join us the following Saturday, April 9, from 7:30-9:30 a.m. for a bird walk at Heritage Park in Flower Mound where we’ll look for birds showcased in the program.

Marshall Grain: Backyard Chickens - Fort Worth & Grapevine

Bob Wucher of Purina will review the life stages of laying hens from birth to “retirement.” He’ll discuss how to nurture baby chicks to adulthood, nesting, laying and general bird behavior. You’ll also learn what equipment is needed to raise and maintain your flock, as well as foods and supplements they’ll need to stay healthy. 

The class will be offered at 10:30am at the Fort Worth store and at 1:30 p.m. at the Grapevine location.

Heard Museum: Spring Plant & Milkweed Sale - McKinney

The annual sale will offer huge selection of native milkweed plants.

Species available for purchase will include Asclepias brachystephana, Asclepias incarnata, Asclepias texana, Asclepias oenotheroides, Asclepias asperula capricornu, Asclepias arenaria and Asclepias asperula asperula.

A representative from Monarch Watch will be available during much of the sale to answer your questions. This sale will also feature native flowering plants that provide nectar for the adult butterflies.

Native Prairies Association of Texas Fort Worth Chapter: Prairie Seekers Workshop - Aledo

Prairie Seekers is a prairie assessment and mapping program developed by Native Prairies Association of Texas. The Fort Worth chapter is hosting a training workshop which covers topics and field training on: prairie plant ID, soils, succession (reading the land), fauna, mapping and iNaturalist. After certification, Prairie Seekersvolunteers conduct surveys whose data will be contributed to the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department state prairie database. This information is used to identify future prairie conservation opportunities across the state.

Earth Day Texas: Film Screening - "Living with the Trinity" - Dallas

Living with the Trinity

The film Living with the Trinity is an incisive look at the history of the Trinity River and its relationship with the people who have settled along its banks. By diving into the past, this film is able to explain why the river remains a rather invisible resource despite the ambitious public works projects planned around it and the millions of Texans who rely on the body of water for life. 

Women in the Environment: Fort Worth Nature Center Tour - Fort Worth

Managing our natural resources is a complex job. Not only does the Fort Worth Nature Center ensure abundant recreational opportunities and the infrastructure that goes along with that; they also apply an array of land management techniques to improve the health of the diverse habitats present on the Refuge; specifically targeting wildlife habitat to ensure connectivity and health of the system. Staff and volunteers of the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge lend a helping hand as the designated stewards of the Refuge and the ecosystem services that it provides.

Friends of O.S. Gray Natural Area: Molly Hollar Birthday Celebration Privet Pull & March Community Day - Arlington

Please bring your favorite shovel, privet pulling or gardening tools, work gloves, or litter picker upper.

Wear appropriate clothing for the weather and for working in a natural area 

(long pants, long sleeves, sturdy shoes, hat).

Water and snacks will be provided.

O.S. Gray Natural Area has no restroom facilities, but Kroger is near by.

Twelve Hills Nature Center: Pollinator Walk - Dallas

Are you ready to plant your flowers for the season? Would you like to attract butterflies and other pollinators to your yard? Join Roger Sanderson, Director of Horticulture at Texas Discovery Gardens, for a pollinator walk and talk around the Twelve Hills property. He’ll be identifying butterflies and telling us what are most welcoming as host and nectar plants. There will also be a free plant raffle.

Consider wearing long pants, closed-toe shoes and bringing insect repellent.
