Habitat Walk - Allen

Join Texas Master Naturalist and Environmental Scientist, Rich Jaynes, to explore and understand the management plans for the four habitat areas of the Connemara Meadow Preserve - a riparian zone along Rowlett Creek that is important as a wildlife corridor; the floodplain grasslands and wetlands in the lower meadow, the hedgerows along perimeter and interior fence lines established during agricultural use, and upland grasslands are located in the upper meadow which has a terrace system from earlier agricultural use. The walk is planned to take about two hours. All ages are welcome.

Bird Walk - Allen

Bring your binoculars and field guides if you have them and learn what to watch for in habits, characteristics and calls from Gailon and Rodney, both with Prairie and Timbers Audubon Society. You can expect about 30+ species. The walk is planned to take about three hours. All ages are welcome. We recommend wearing long pants, closed-toed shoes, sunscreen and insect repellent.

Party for the Sharks - Dallas

Join us for shark-inspired drink specials, shark trivia, a sustainable/local menu and a discussion with award-winning shark conservationist, marine biologist and documentary filmmaker David McGuire on hammerhead and great white shark conservation (talk begins @ 6 PM). If you haven't heard about the issues facing sharks, apex predators essential for sustaining sea life, see the article that ran in the Christian Science Monitor: http://www.csmonitor.com/Commentary/Opinion/2012/0813/This-Shark-Week-l…. McGuire is also speaking at the Museum of Nature and Science on Sept. 16. See GSDFW calendar listing.

Green Building and Penguins - Dallas

The Dallas Sierra Club Meeting includes the following program:

Green Building - Learn about home remodeling with a "green" concept. Architect Terry Sullivan will tell how to make your home green, and will present case studies of green remodeled homes that show the latest in high efficiency air conditioning, plumbing fixtures, and electrical fixtures for energy conservation.

Penguins - When most people think of a penguin, they envision a tuxedo clad Emperor penguin
living in Antarctic, as documented in the film "March of the Penguins" or the movie "Happy Feet."
But did you know there are actually 17 species of penguins living on the planet today? And
believe it or not, a number of them live in warm climates. David Salomon, photographer and author of the new book Penguin-Pedia, introduces the 17 species of penguins that the majority of readers may have never known existed -- and will be fascinated to learn about.
