FWAS hosts internationally known author, researcher and conservationist Katie Fallon. Her latest book, Cerulean Blues: A Personal Search for a Vanishing Songbird will be discussed along with

wide-ranging anecdotes about her travels and discovery of the natural world. She will also be

signing her book for those that bring it and we hope to have copies for sale to those who’d like to

purchase it. A continental breakfast will be served along with hot coffee.

Come celebrate National Moth Week with a special nighttime presentation about the cousins of our butterfly friends. Texas Parks and Wildlife Urban Biologist Sam Kieschnick will lead this event.

These nocturnal insects have amazing patterns and colors, but special lights are needed to fully attract and appreciate them. We’ll be setting up some moth lights and moth sheets to entice the nocturnal bugs to visit for everyone to see. 

Critterman and his live animals are engaging entertainment for children and adults. Meet and learn about animals from around the world that can make you squirm. We teach that these animals look the way they do to survive, not scare anyone.

Carol Roark and Lon Burnam visited India on the Sierra Club's "Treasures, Tigers, and the Taj Mahal, India" trip in February 2019. Carol will share her photographs of wild tigers (!) and other wildlife along with India's cultural treasures and daily life. They'll both talk about the important issues facing India in the twenty-first century.

The symposium promotes the conservation of bluebirds and teaches the public how to attract and provide quality habitat for bluebirds across Texas.

Topics include Bluebird Basics, House Sparrow Control, Birding in Texas and Planting for Bluebirds Success. Information on Cornell Lab of Ornithology NestWatch and a Nestbox Building Workshop will also be offered.

Learn more about bats and the conservation efforts taking place to help spread the word about this amazing mammal. Meet some bats from Bat World Sanctuary and then go on a night hike to listen for and possibly spot bats in our park. Best suited for ages 12 and up.

Cost: Discovery Room admission, $3-$5.

There are a total of 629 common bugs and Insects found in Texas in the Insect Identification database. Master Naturalist Judy Meagher will present a 1-hour PowerPoint about insects and then a 1-hour tour through the Nature Park pointing out the valuable contribution of nature's bugs.
