This month, Monty Hempel will join us to talk about his most recent film, The Eighth Billion. The film examines the intersection of human population growth and the decline of wild places and creatures. It concentrates on the magnificent landscapes and seascapes that are being irreversibly altered by overpopulation and increasing per capita consumption rates.

This class will cover the benefits of using rain water to irrigate your landscape, garden and even your house plants. Suggestions will be provided on how to utilize the rain barrel in conjunction with your existing gutter system at home. Participants will learn how to collect and utilize rainwater at home and have the opportunity to construct their very own 55-gallon rain barrel.

Homeowners and businesses will learn how to design, construct and maintain a rain garden. With proper plant selection and design a rain garden will retain and treat rain water. Plant list provided. Jim Shermbeck, community organizer and director of Downwinders At Risk, will update our group about the current state of affairs on air quality in DFW and the proposals from environmental and concerned citizens to TCEQ on how to fix our nonattainment with the Clean Air Act. Jim and Downwinders at Risk have led the fight against the dirty air created by cement kilns in Midlothian for more than two decades. The speaker is followed by refreshments and announcements.
