Solar Home Tour - DFW

North Texas Renewable Energy Group (NTREG) announces the  DFW Solar Home Tour, October 1st, 2011  www.dfwsolarhometour.org

The 2nd annual DFW Solar Home Tour is a part of the American Solar Energy Society (ASES) National Solar Tour www.nationalsolartour.org . It offers the public the opportunity to tour innovative green homes and buildings and learn how homeowners and businesses can use renewable energy, energy efficiency, and other sustainable technologies. 

 

"Will There Be Enough Water in Texas?" Forum - Irving

A public forum on the water situation in north Texas will be held on Saturday, Sept. 24.  The forum, titled “Will There Be Enough Water in Texas,” will be co-sponsored by six area chapters of the League of Women Voters of Texas and two area groups of the Sierra Club.  It will be held at the Irving Central Library, 801 W. Irving Blvd, from 1:00-4:30 and is free to the public.

Several distinguished speakers have agreed to present information on the supplies and delivery of water in our region and will answer questions from the audience. They include Lewis McMahan, a Director of the Texas Water Development Board, Tod Maurina of the North Texas Groundwater Conservation District, Denis Qualls of Dallas Water Utilities, and Tyson Broad of the Sierra Club. A talk on the basics of Texas water law will be given by Simone Kiel of Freese and Nichols, a consulting firm to the State of Texas.

12-Day Permaculture Class - Dallas

We welcome a 12-day Permaculture class from experienced Permaculture Design instructors Patricia Allison and Dick Pierce to our area. This is a hands-on, part lecture, part outside trips, part outside speaker experience that will change your life and your approach to sustainability and green living forever.

Patricia Allison is a founder of Earthaven Ecovillage in North Carolina and is coming from NC to teach the first 7 days of class.

Dick Pierce is a Permaculture instructor from Austin and will come up from Austin to teach the last 5 days of the course.

These two have teamed up to bring a Permaculture Design Certificate course to DFW over three long week-ends this fall. Oct 7-10, Oct 21-24, Nov 4-7.

Price of this 12-day course is $675. A deposit of $120 is due to hold your place in the class; the remainder is due the first day of class.

Discovery Gardens Green Exhibit during the Fair - Dallas

Visitors can tour native gardens outside, including the stunning Grande Allee fountain. Inside, a tropical butterfly house includes hundreds of free flying butterflies with daily butterfly releases at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The annual monarch tagging demonstrations will take place at 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. New in 2011, the Texas Discovery Gardens Green Exhibit celebrates fun, easy ways to live more sustainably. Multiple vendors will be on hand with natural treats, eco-friendly transportation, and more. Sculptures and paintings throughout Texas Discovery Gardens connect art with nature, featuring the work of Silvia Thornton, Anne Neal, Dan and Lori Dudley, student sculptors at El Centro College, and more. We are also proud to unveil a public art display with the City of Dallas from Vancouver artists Michael Vandermeer and Cheryl Hamilton, featuring stunning glass and steel nature-themed pieces that hang from our two story lobby ceiling. Open daily from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. $3 admission.
