The topic for this meetup is Lobbying For Change (how to organize around topics & the causes we want to work on together this month). We'll also be talking about the latest environmental news, and then move on to member suggested topics.

The Regional Transportation Council (RTC) of the North Central Texas Council of Governments has served as the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for regional transportation planning in the Dallas-Fort Worth area since 1974. The MPO works in cooperation with the region’s transportation providers to address the complex transportation needs of the rapidly growing metropolitan area. The Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Area includes Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Hood, Hunt, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant and Wise counties. The RTC’s 44 members include local elected or appointed officials from the metropolitan area and representatives from each of the area’s transportation providers. An interactive discussion about taking our waste reduction policies beyond the current, well-established curbside recycling programs with the goal of eventually reducing, reusing, recycling and composting 90 percent of our overall waste. That's what people mean when they say "zero waste" and that's what all communities should strive for. Arlington and other DFW cities can take the lead.
Zac Trahan, Texas Campaign for the Environment's DFW director, was home schooled as a child in the Hill Country outside Austin. His deep connection with and respect for the natural world has only strengthened since joining TCE in the fall of 2002. Zac has worked in all three TCE offices and was the Houston Program Director from 2008-2011. He believes our common problems call for collaborative solutions and that protecting our future means protecting our shared surroundings.

Jim Shermbeck, community organizer and director of Downwinders At Risk, will update our group about the current state of affairs on air quality in DFW and the proposals from environmental and concerned citizens to TCEQ on how to fix our nonattainment with the Clean Air Act. Jim and Downwinders at Risk have led the fight against the dirty air created by cement kilns in Midlothian for more than two decades. The speaker is followed by refreshments and announcements.

Speaker will be Sam Kieschnick, nature education specialist for Mansfield Parks and Recreation. Kieschnick is an enthusiastic and dynamic speaker who loves his work and will be presenting a program entitled "Does nature matter? The importance of parks for nature education."
Kieschnick will discuss the new nature education programs being offered in Mansfield, the role of the new Elmer W. Oliver Nature Park (similar, but on a smaller scale to River Legacy) and how Mansfield is using the new nature park as an outdoor classroom and venue for citizen science projects. He will also present some ideas on how cities like Arlington and Mansfield could possibly work together to make their park systems a win-win for residents, the parks, and the critters which live in the parks.
