Primitive Skills Survival Class - Collinsville

Costs:  Adults - 17 year olds $75 / 15-12year olds $60 / 11-8year olds $50   ****Call us about large family and group rates.

Length of Time: Begins Sat Morning at 9:30 and ending Sunday Afternoon at 2:30 pm.

Class Description

This class can be taken before or after the Primitive Survival Class 1. The survival sacred order is: Shelter, Water, Fire, Food. This "Class 2" covers the food aspect while "Class 1" covers the shelter, water and fire.

Nature's Supermarket is always open with a buffet of choices. Learning to gather and prepare wild edibles throughout the seasons is an exciting adventure, that includes both plant materials and animals. Then knowing how to prepare them into palatable meals is the next important step. The class cover the three aspects of Wild Edible Plants, Wild Meats, and Primitive Cooking.

Night Hike - McKinney

A trail which is familiar by day becomes a whole new experience at night! Our fearless trail guides will lead you on an adventure in which owls hooting, coyotes howling and strange rustlings in the brush are wonderful possibilities.**

Animals and plants use the nighttime to their advantage, and we can sneak a peek into their world!

Cost: $12 non-members / $10 members

Closed toed shoes, long pants, and bug spray are recommended. Bring a flashlight with a red lens on it to protect your night vision while looking for nocturnal animals! Participants will be outdoors for at least an hour.

Denizens of Darkness Exhibit - McKinney

Are you afraid of the dark? Most humans are. Learn about bats and other creatures that are active at night--their purpose, their habitat and how they live their day at night. Study the moon phases and explore how our human limitations feed our imaginations. Muster the courage to look in your closet. Discover why there is nothing to fear.

After Dark in the Park - Arlington

This family-friendly fall festival features starlight stroll, storytelling, karaoke, pumpkin patch, bounce houses and a variety of children's games, crafts and activities. All proceeds benefit the environmental education programs of River Legacy Living Science Center.

$7.  (Concessions and some acitivities have additional costs.)

October 7-9, 5-9pm daily.

Trinity Trash Bash - Arlington

Join a multi-city clean up focusing on communities served by the Trinity River watershed. Volunteers will contribute to make the city cleaner and prevent litter flowing into rivers, streams, and lakes. Volunteers are needed to clean up by canoe or along the banks of the river. 8 am to 1 pm – Volunteers with experience in canoeing who will help with clean up from on the river. 

10 am to 1 pm – Volunteers who want to help clean up the banks of the river, get trash from canoes and clean the canoes.

Concrete Leaf Casting - Dallas

Let Joanne Durbin, Dallas County Master Gardener, show you how to transform a piece of nature into a beautiful decoration for your garden. Using leaves from the garden and a few simple ingredients, Joanne will show you how to create your own concrete casting. Your unique finished work of art will show the beauty of Mother Nature’s work through the veins, leaf texture and shape. Joanne will show you how to embellish your piece using paint so that you may finish your piece at home once it has dried. Limited space available so sign up early! $50 or $45 for Members

Bathing Beauty - Handmade Bath Products - Dallas

Bath salts, and oils and fizzies, oh my! Everyone loves bath products, and what better time than the holidays to start working on your own signature blends. David Fisher, Guide to Candle & Soap Making at About.com, will demonstrate how easy it is to get started making your bath items to help melt away the stress of the season.  Learn about and make your own products to keep for yourself or give as gifts for the holidays. Go home with samples and recipes to get started on some great stocking stuffers. $40 or $36 for Members

Owl Prowl - Dallas

Owls are mysterious and amazing creatures.  Ben Jones, State Director of Education for Audubon Texas, will introduce you to the owls that call our area home.  He will cover owl anatomy, hunting techniques and some of their amazing abilities. Then, you will set out on an owl prowl through the Arboretum calling owls and listening for replies. $25 or $22.50 for Members
