Bird & Nature Walks

Enjoy local brews paired with food created by local chefs at this fundraiser for Connemara Conservancy. $50.

Learn two of the primitive and sacred arts of making fire with materials found in nature. Each student will carefully craft his/her own bow drill and hand drill set, using only a knife. Ages 16 and up. $70.

Ages 3-9 are invited to hunt for eggs in the forest, learn about our egg-laying friends, create a wacky spring bonnet. $15.

Guided hike on wooded trail. $5 (with paid admission).

Explore the Nature Center before nightfall. Preregistration required. Meet at front ate. $10 (includes admission fee).

Bird watching on the water. Chance to see osprey, American white pelicans and bald eagles. Parents must sign a liability waiver for minor children. Pre-registration required. $20 (includes admission fee).

Canoe tour in the evening hours. Canoes, paddles and lifejackets are provided. Children must be 5 years or older. Parents must sign a liability waiver for minor children. Some previous experience recommended. Meet at back gate. Pre-registration required. $20 (includes admission fee).

Join FWNC&R director and plant ecologist Suzanne Tuttle for a 2.5 mile trail hike around the refuge. Learn to identify deciduous trees and shrubs in winter. Pre-registration required. Cost: $15 (includes admission fee).

Simple sketching and watercolor techniques will be demonstrated by a staff artist. If you have these, please bring: a sketchbook or paper for wet media, pencil, eraser, school grade watercolor paint and a small container for water. A pointed #10 paintbrush makes it easy to apply color. Paper, a few brushes, paint and other supplies will be available for use. Art experience helpful but is not necessary. This activity is geared for ages 14 years and older. Free with paid admission.

Participants receive a guide with many activities to get young children interested in nature, including songs, dances and snacks. $30 (includes admission fee). Preregistration required.
