Cedar Hill among top solar friendly cities in Texas

Cedar Hill, Texas, earned a Gold designation from Solsmart for solar friendliness, alongside Austin and El Paso. Recognized for sustainable practices, Cedar Hill applied for this in January and advanced solar adoption, benefiting consumers through ordinance updates and local partnerships, successfully fostering over 100 residential solar installations.

Climate change in North Texas to be addressed at free symposium

The North Texas Climate Change Symposium on March 9 at Belo Mansion in Dallas is a free event hosted by the city and the Dallas Bar Association to educate attendees on local climate issues. Featuring 13 speakers, including keynote Dr. John Nielsen-Gammon, it covers topics like climate resilience, justice, and economic impacts.

Mid Cities vegetarian cafe adds plant-based brunch

The Healthy Hippie, a vegan-vegetarian cafe in Watauga, offers new plant-based brunch options. Founded by Kelli Myatt, a fitness and nutrition coach, the cafe provides a variety of vegan dishes and aims for zero waste. Myatt promotes a peaceful transition to plant-based eating.

Denton's switch to renewables spurred by environmentalism, economics

In 2015, despite a historic fracking ban reversal, Denton committed to 100% renewable energy by 2020, driven by environmentalism and economics. With municipally-owned utilities, Denton secures affordable renewable contracts. While a natural gas plant remains contentious, the plan aims for stability and lower rates, championed by engaged citizens.

Gas driller's request to waive setback in Arlington denied

The Arlington City Council denied Total E&P Barnett USA's request to reduce the gas drilling setback from 600 feet to 319 feet. The decision followed protests from local residents, Liveable Arlington, and the Dallas Sierra Club, highlighting growing concerns over gas drilling's dangers and community impact.

Feisty Arlington activist took on environmental issues big and small

Harriet Varnum Irby, a prominent Arlington activist, dedicated four decades to environmental causes and fought against gas drilling despite her failing health. A memorial will be held on March 17 at First Jefferson Unitarian Universalist Church. Contributions can be made to the Harriet Varnum Irby Fund in her memory.
