Local eco groups mark Pope Francis’ visit

Today Pope Francis alights at a New York airbase and sets out on a six-day, three-city U.S. tour. He comes no closer to Dallas-Fort Worth than Philadelphia, but North Texans are enthusiastically commemorating the visit, and not only with open-air live webcasts of his Sunday afternoon Mass. For environmentalists and just plain folks with concerns for the health and safety of humans and other life on Earth amid pollution, resource depletion and climate change, his visit is momentous.

Texas Discovery Gardens debuts solar-powered learning center

Texas Discovery Gardens at Fair Park flipped the switch last week on a new 410-square-foot solar array atop a cedar pagoda, home to the garden’s new Natural Learning Center.

According to Texas Discovery Garden’s executive director Dick Davis, the 500-square-foot Natural Learning Center's multi-purpose building is a model of sustainability having been constructed using repurposed material. 

Earth Day Texas launches 'Earth Day Monthlies' program

Earth Day Texas launches 'Earth Day Monthlies' in collaboration with Westwood School to encourage daily eco-conscious living. Events will be held at local breweries, featuring sustainability discussions. Additionally, they plan an environmental film series with TEDxSMU. The first EDMo event is on September 17, focusing on sustainable food.

Dallas-based Shrine Circus producer drops wild animal acts from shows

An empty trailer that once hauled big cats for the Shrine Circus was the backdrop for the announcement that Dallas-based Fun Time Shows will no longer include wild animals in its shows. Bill Cunningham, CEO of Fun Time Shows, made the announcement in Lee Park in Dallas beside an empty trailer.
