DFW wins nationwide iNaturalist Challenge
In a surprising victory, DFW citizen scientists won the nationwide iNaturalist Challenge, surpassing San Francisco. Over 500 North Texans made 24,000 observations, with Sam Kieschnick leading the effort and highlighting the importance of these records in showcasing local biodiversity. The competition spurred enthusiasm and highlighted species like the showy pink primrose.

North Texas Climate March in Dallas debuts new coalition
In Dallas, about 300 people marched from Dealey Plaza to the EPA office during the North Texas People's Climate March, coinciding with President Trump's 100th day in office. This event, organized by the new Coalition for Environmental Justice - North Texas and including various partners, marked the coalition's first local activism effort.

Proposed disposal well near Lake Arlington to be discussed at public forum
A proposed disposal well near Lake Arlington is getting pushback from local municipalities and environmental groups in Tarrant County. As a result, State Representative Nicole Collier, who represents district 95, is hosting a forum to address the topic on Thursday, April 20, at 6 p.m. at the Handley Meadowbrook Community Center in Fort Worth.

Dallas native opens vegan cowboy boot store in Big D
Dallas native Kat Mendenhall opened MendRT, a vegan cowboy boot store, in the Design District. The store offers faux leather western fashion, expanding from her successful online business and features custom-made boots. Mendenhall aims to attract mainstream shoppers, despite most customers being from outside Texas.

DFW nature lovers challenged to compete in iNaturalist bioblitz
North Texas nature lovers are encouraged to grab their smart phones and head outside for a DFW-wide bioblitz on Easter weekend. During April 14-18, Dallas-Fort Worth is competing with metropolitan areas across the U.S. to see which city can post the most observations on iNaturalist.org, the citizen science website.

Environmentalists, cities push back against proposed disposal well near Lake Arlington
A natural gas company wants to put a wastewater injection well in east Fort Worth next to Lake Arlington, a major water source for North Texas. The proposed site is located near the intersection of Cravens and Berry Streets, about 9,000 feet from Lake Arlington Dam, according to the city of Arlington.

LLELA prepares for its closeup with bioblitz planned on April 1
Last April, experts from across the state came together at Tandy Hills Natural Area in Fort Worth for the largest bioblitz ever held in North Texas. Volunteers not only recorded 3,000 observations of flora and fauna at the 160-acre prairie remnant, they inspired another group of naturalists to host their own bioblitz.
