The weather held for the North Texas People's Climate March Saturday morning when severe storms were forecasted later in the day. A crowd of about 300 marched from Dealey Plaza to the Dallas EPA office several blocks away accompanied by a stiff wind that picked up a few hats and signs. The Dallas march was one of nearly 400 sister marches held nationwide on April 29, marking President Trump's 100th day in office. The Washington D.C. march was estimated to have drawn around 200,000.
The Dallas march was organized by the newly formed Coalition for Environmental Justice - North Texas, spearheaded by longtime Dallas environmental activist Gary Stuard. Partners include System Change Not Climate Change, Solidarity, Dallas County County Green Party, Dallas Sierra Club, 350.org/Dallas, Democratic Socialists of America/Dallas, Our Revolution/Dallas, Dallas Action, Dallas Peace and Justice Center, No DAPL/Dallas, Livable Arlington, CodePINK Greater Dallas and North Texas Veterans For Peace.
Speakers at the event included Dallas County Comissioner Theresa Daniel; Cherelle Blazer of Texas Sierra Club/Beyond Coal Campaign; Yolonda Blue Horse of First Nations/No DAPL activist; and Joe Estelle of North Texas Veterans For Peace.
The march was the group's first public effort at local activism.
