"The Carbon Cycle & Global Change" - Dallas

The carbon cycle is one of the most fundamental components of the earth-atmosphere-biosphere system.  In this short-course we will learn about the key properties and processes of the contemporary carbon cycle.  We will also examine how the balance of this cycle is now being altered by fossil fuel use and land use change such as deforestation, both of which release carbon in the form of climatically active greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane which increase the heat-holding capacity of the atmosphere.  We will then explore how these changes in atmospheric composition will affect the climate system, and how climate changes predicted for the future will interact with ecosystem structure and function.  Lastly, we will investigate some potential avenues by which human industry and land use practices might be able to reduce their impact on the carbon cycle and mitigate the potential for changes in our climate system.
