\u2022 Eric is NTREG's Secretary, and a very long-term electric vehicle advocate.<\/p>

There is only one river in North Texas: the Trinity. Once rejected and forgotten, paid attention to only when it floods, the Trinity is transforming from a place of refuse to refuge.<\/div>

We\u2019ll take a tour of the Trinity\u2019s four forks\u2014Clear, East, Elm, and West\u2014exploring each one\u2019s unique characteristics, plus the nature preserves and attractions they are home to. This riverine network is home to the Trinity River Paddling Trail<\/a>, a National Park Service recreation trail with over 120 miles of floating fun.<\/div>

The talk concludes with a brief overview of our river follies, including the time when the West Fork was known as the River of Death, the misguided attempts to turn it into a barge canal that was thwarted by Ned Fritz<\/a>, and the absurd idea to place a freeway in its floodplain, which took over a decade to be abandoned. Yet there are more Trinity indignities in the works.

Michael Smith, a retired psychological associate with lifelong expertise in nature, will detail how the reptile and amphibian (herp) landscape has changed over the years, why we might not notice the losses and what stokes our sense of protectiveness \u2014 or not. Meeting participants also will get to know naturalists and biologists who are working to save animals like the Texas Horned Lizard and the Louisiana Pine Snake and what citizens can do to help.<\/p>
Smith expresses a passion for herpetology, ecotherapy, and being aware in nature. He has written three books, two of them on herpetology and natural history and the third on the importance of being mindful in natural places throughout the state. He also writes at Our Lives in Nature<\/a> and for Green Source DFW.<\/p>
