How to Make a Rain Barrel - July 28 & August 25:  Learn how to construct a 55-gallon rain barrel that you will get to take home! You'll also learn how to install an efficient irrigation system and other ways to conserve water while maintaining a healthy landscape. Dr. Dotty Woodson of the Texas AgriLife Research and Extension Center will teach each class.

Come learn about Delaware Creek water quality and the volunteer water monitoring program called Texas Stream Team. Watch water quality testing and data gathering at the water’s edge and learn how to keep an eye on water quality and our environment in Irving.  Registration is required.

Grand Prairie Farmers Market will feature a "Make it and Take it Rain Barrel Class" on Saturday, Sept. 1, in addition to its weekly supply of fresh fruits and vegetables, baked goods, coffee, tea, tamales, jellies and relishes, grass-fed meats, homemade soaps, candles and more.

The Rain Barrel Class, 9 a.m.-10:30 a.m., costs $35 for Grand Prairie residents and $50 for non-residents, and pre-registration is required. The Grand Prairie Farmers Market is open March 31, 2012 through December on Saturdays 8 a.m.-1 p.m. at Market Square, 120 W. Main St., in downtown Grand Prairie. Turtle Watch: Learn to identify different species of turtles found at the Nature Center and in your area. This training is for citizens to help monitor our turtle populations. You will learn how to document turtle sightings in your area and report your findings to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

Part of your time will be indoors learning about turtles and their habitats and the other portion is in the field putting your skills to the test.

Maximum of 30 participants.

Kayak Tour: Tour a stretch of the West Fork of the Trinity River with kayaks. View ducks, herons, beaver and other critters.

Sunscreen, water and weather appropriate clothing (including shoes that can get wet) are recommended. Kayaks, paddles and lifejackets are provided. Kayakers must be at least 14 years old and accompanied by their guardian, otherwise at least 18 years old. Some previous experience recommended.

Registration ends preceding Thursday or when filled. Maximum - 8 participants. 

Meet at Big River Parking Lot. Pre-registration required. $20 (includes admission fee)/MEMBERS $15.

Canoe Fest: Enjoy a bit of canoeing/kayaking on your own on the quiet waters around Greer Island. Canoes/kayaks, paddles and lifejackets provided. Children in canoes must be 5 years or older and accompanied by a parent or guardian. Kayakers must be at least 14 years old and accompanied by their guardian, otherwise at least 18 years old. Parents must sign a liability waiver for minor children.

No registration needed. First come-first served.

Greer Island gate will open at 11:30 a.m. Meet at Greer Island. $5 (with paid admission)/MEMBERS $3.

Water Conservation Symposium Set for Thursday in Waco

 The Lone Star Chapter of the Sierra Club and a number of other organizations are sponsoring a Brazos Valley Water Conservation Symposium in Waco this Thursday, June 21 to highlight the ways in which the region may meet its water needs through enhanced water conservation. The symposium, subtitled “The Business Case for Water Conservation,” is aimed at water utility professionals and local decision-makers but the general public is welcome to attend. Co-sponsors of the symposium include the national Alliance for Water Efficiency, the Brazos River Authority, the City of Waco, the National Wildlife Federation, and the Texas Water Foundation.
