Venus Transit Day - Fort Worth

*Venus Transit Day: Since Venus orbits between the Earth and the Sun, we have the opportunity to see it transit (pass in front of the Sun) every so often.

On June 5th, we will have that opportunity. Join Nature Center staff and Fort Worth Astronomical Society members in celebrating this event. We will have activities for kids and of course, scopes set up to see Venus move across the sky with the Sun as our backdrop.

Sharky Sunday - Shark Stewards - Kayla Ellis - Dallas

Shark Stewards Texas' student campaign organizer (and high-school junior) Kayla Ellis will be speaking about diving with sharks at the Museum of Nature and Science on Sunday, May 20th.  Bring the family!  It's from 1:00-3:00 PM (Kayla will speak at 2:00).  Click here for details: http://dallasmuseumnatureandscience.org/sharks/ai1ec_event/sharky-sunday-exhibitor-tbd-3/?instance_id=442

This is a timely talk as sharks should be more visible in Texas in the months to come.  Our organization is trying to get support for a ban on shark finning, which passed with bipartisan support in California, Washington, Oregon and Hawaii - and is being fast-tracked in Illinois as I type this.  Already approved by the Illinois House and Senate, the bill is awaiting the Governor's signature to become a law.  We think Texas can be the next state to speak up for sharks, and the sustainability of our seas!

Located 16 miles south of downtown Dallas in Cedar Hill, Dogwood Canyon is part of the White Rock Escarpment. Nowhere in North Texas can one find a greater variety of rare species than in Dogwood Canyon. Plants and animals from east, west and central Texas converge here, making the Canyon the only place in the world where one can find the Black-chinned Hummingbird of west Texas nesting in the flowering dogwood tree of east Texas.

Coppell Farmers Market - Coppell

The Coppell Farmers Market, established in 2003, has become one of the best community markets in the DFW area, a one-stop shopping trip for fresh, seasonal produce, pastured meats, eggs, breads and locally made foods. Both the customers and the farmers/producers have shaped the market to what it is today, guided by a community-based organization, the Coppell Farmers Market Committee. The guidelines for the Coppell Farmers Market state that all products sold at the Coppell Farmers Market shall be grown, raised, and/or produced directly by the vendor within the North Central Texas region, with the exception of full disclosure and approval of selling another’s product.
