Texas Watershed Steward Workshop - Dallas

Note:  There are two identical workshops on November 9 and 10.  The November 9 workshop will be held at Texas TAMU Agricultural Research & Extension Ctr.

The Texas Watershed Steward program is a free, one-day educational workshop designed to help watershed residents improve and protect their water resources by getting involved in local watershed protection and management activities.

The workshop will provide an overview of water quality and watershed management in Texas. It will primarily focus on water quality issues in the City of Dallas Watersheds.

Texas Master Naturalist Meeting - McKinney

Monthly meeting of the Blackland Prairie Chapter of Texas Master Naturalist Speaker - Becky Grimmer serves as Chief Financial Officer for the Botanical Research Institute of Texas (BRIT), combining her broad experience in finance with her long-time passion for native plants and ecosystems. She enjoys a wide range of outdoor activities, including gardening, where she has used native plants in landscaping for more than 25 years. "Grow!" Film Screening - Dallas

Screening of the movie "Grow!" by Slow Money, a non-profit dedicated to building and supporting the local sustainable food system. Free but donations requested.

Grow! is a great introduction to local farming issues and why people choose to farm, the rewards and the sacrifices. Two film makers spent an entire growing season with 20 farmers and two apprentices on 12 different farms in Georgia. This is their story.

There is parking located along Jefferson which is surprisingly quiet after 6pm as well as two lots close to the theater. The first one is located in the Bank of Texas in between Zang and Madison along Centre street. The second lot is located behind the theater on Sunset avenue also between Madison and Zang. This is generally an overflow lot that we use for valet services when needed, Jefferson is usually sufficient for most performances.

Sustainability Salon - Rockwall

What happens?

We move around tables discussing the sustainability subject of each table for 30 minutes before moving on to another table and another subject. Great way to learn other's views on sustainable subjects, express your own views, and meet like-minded people.

EXCEPT--Please No Politics! Sustainability is larger than and reaches across all political parties so please leave politics at home.

Please bring chips, crackers, cookies or sweets to share. I will bring dips and hummus. Also bring your own beverage of choice.

Living sustainably saves energy, thus money, particularly as we transition to higher, and then even higher, costs of that energy

But not all ways of living sustainably are practical. And some sustainable living is most practical (like solar hot water) when you do-it-yourself.

We have three speakers to talk about practical sustainability--all experts in their fields.

Phil Fisher, licensed electrician, solar designer/installer, and owner of Solar Systems Installations, will discuss solar hot water (now often best if you DIY) and hot water by heat pump.

Nature Walk at Twelve Hills Nature Ctr - Dallas

Walk through Twelve Hills Nature Center with Master Naturalist Dan Northcut and learn about the Blackland Prairie Ecosystem.  Look at plants indigenous to this area and some that invaded; see what survived the summer heat and what works well in home landscaping.

The City of Farmers Branch presents 6 public nature walks at the new John F. Burke Nature Preserve.  North Texas Chapter Master Naturalists will conduct the walks.  Come out.  Bring family and friends.

The Nature Preserve comprises 104 acres of bottomland hardwood forest, fields and wetlands. It lies between the Pres. Geo. Bush Tpke and the Elm Fork of the Trinity.  Diverse plant community, lot of birds, etc.  Open dawn to dusk every day.

Location - 1111 Valley View Lane.  Not in Google Maps yet.  About 0.6 miles west of Luna Rd on Valley View Lane
