EPA to share environmental justice success stories at Dallas forum

The EPA Region 6 Environmental Justice Forum in Dallas will showcase successful collaborations from June 12-13. It aims to highlight results of government, industry, and community partnerships, focusing on topics like air and water quality improvements and disaster responses, and fostering inter-state engagement.

Dallas-Fort Worth has poor air quality that keeps more kids off the playground and sends more respiratory patients to the hospital per capita than most U.S. urban centers, as local, federal and health association studies of recent years show. But in some neighborhoods, where heavy industry is placed out of view to most, the air is much, much worse.

Feisty Arlington activist took on environmental issues big and small

Harriet Varnum Irby, a prominent Arlington activist, dedicated four decades to environmental causes and fought against gas drilling despite her failing health. A memorial will be held on March 17 at First Jefferson Unitarian Universalist Church. Contributions can be made to the Harriet Varnum Irby Fund in her memory.

Luminant Energy to close Big Brown and Sandow coal plants

North Texans environmentalists are cheering the news that two notorious Texas smog monsters are meeting their demise. On Friday, Luminant Energy announced closures of its two-unit Sandow Power Plant in Milam County and its two-unit Big Brown Power Plant in Freestone County.
