Blackland Native Prairie Association of Texas: Gateway Park & Post Oak Preserve - Dallas

February’s meeting will be a field trip to Gateway Park & Post Oak Preserve. Tim Dalbey will be guiding us around Gateway Park to see remnant prairies on the bluff tops from 10am-12pm (maybe longer if people are enjoying hiking the bluffs) and Post Oak Preserve to see the “carpet” of dog-toothed violets (often called trout lilies) from 12-2pm. Bring water and snacks for your trip and lunch as well as appropriate footwear. There will be some hiking up and down hills on natural foot paths, some with loose gravel. We will be accessing a bluff top to the south and possibly north, and maybe some other areas if there is time.

Post Oak Preserve is a Dallas County Park and Open Space (DCPOS) preserve. It is across from the DISD Environmental Center. The reason to go here is to see the “carpet” of dog-toothed violets (often called trout lilies) that should be out at this time and with Corralrhiza maculata (coralroot) orchids.

Friends of Tandy Hills Natural Area: Brush Bash - Fort Worth - RESCHEDULED

One day a year, Friends of Tandy Hills Natural Area with help from the City of Fort Worth Parks and Community Services Dept. hosts a Brush Bash to clear sections of the prairie of invasive and unwanted trees, brush and trash.

The brush has been cut and will be ready for volunteers to drag to waiting trucks for delivery to a composting facility. Your help really makes a difference! Manly Men and Wild Women welcome.

UPDATE: Due to a very strong chance of rain this Saturday, Brush Bash and the Recycling Event have been rescheduled for Saturday, Feb. 7.

North American Nature Photography Association: Texas Buckeye Trail - Dallas

The next NANPA North Texas Meetup is at the Texas Buckeye Trail, which will take us into the heart of the Great Trinity Forest to a refuge of beautiful buckeye trees along the Trinity River. The trail also meanders through a forest of beautiful trees, and several picturesque meadows filled with green grasses and graphic trees trunks.

I am hoping this will be the apex of the Buckeyes, given the weather delays.

NOTE:  If the buckeyes bloom early or late we might reschedule a bit to match the apex!

We will meet at the parking lot near the trailhead and then hike in together. For those who arrive early or late, the Buckeye Trail is well marked and partially paved and it is pretty hard to get lost.

Lots of great landscape opportunities, along with macros of the buckeyes and other flora.

Here are a couple of pics from there. Check out last year's trip for more

Please note that there will be a NANPA Release of Liability to sign.

North American Nature Photography Association: Digital Processing+ iNaturalist.org - Dallas

Photographer Sean Fitzgerald will give a one hour presentation on Digital Image Processing. Guest speaker, Derek Broman, will offer an introduction to iNaturalist.org. iNaturalist.org is a fantastic tool that turns every nature photographer into a citizen scientist, and we are going to see if we an use it in future NANPA projects. It is also a great way for photographers to get help identifying plants and animals as well.

There is free parking during the day all along Canton, and there are lots of restaurants nearby if you would like to grab a bite beforehand.

Bring Your Bag: Volunteer Gathering & Update - Fort Worth

"Bring Your Bag, Fort Worth" is a project whose goal is to educate and encourage the citizens of Fort Worth to bring their reusable shopping bags in order to reduce waste and change habits in our fair city.

Please join us for a social gathering with a brief update on the project and volunteer opportunities. We'd love for you to join us, whether you can give two hours of your time or play a more significant role. We will cover all of those opportunities at the gathering.
