Indian Marker Trees - Dallas

Hosted by the Dallas Historic Tree Coalition. Steve Houser, a consulting arborist for more than 30 years and past DHTC President, will talk about Indian Marker Trees. He will explain what a marker tree is and explore the controversy about their existence, who proclaims them to be real, and other history on the subject. We will also learn about other groups in the country that are researching these trees, and what DHTC is doing in our region. You will learn the typical shapes seen in these trees, and will hear about the trees we are finding in Texas. Reserve a space at info@DHTC.org no later than Monday, Oct. 15. National Planting Day - Allen

The Allen Garden Club, Keep Allen Beautiful and the Allen Heritage Guild are holding a community event for residents to take part in the beautification of Allen Heritage Village. Residents are encouraged to join in the event by helping to plant flowers, spread mulch or help install irrigation around the historic Lynge House. To participate, just show up during the specified time and come prepared to plant. Please bring a pair of gloves and a spade or hand shovel to assist in the fun. Backyard Chickens - Flower Mound

The Backyard Chickens Collaborative DFW North is exhibiting chickens at the Fall Trash Bash and Green Environmental Fair put on by Keep Flower Mound Beautiful in the Home Depot parking lot.

Two classes are scheduled to help new chicken advocates get started:

11:30 a.m. - Picking Chickens, How to Select Chicken Breeds, by Mark Glover.

Bring Back the Monarchs - Flower Mound

The Flower Mound Public Library will host the family-friendly “Bring Back the Monarchs. ”Monarch Watch volunteer Jenny Singleton will discuss the migratory patterns of the Monarchs, its biology, and beneficial plants for the butterfly. “Bring Back the Monarchs” is sponsored by Monarch Watch, The Flower Mound Foundation, Keep Flower Mound Beautiful and The Native Plant Society of Texas (Trinity Forks Chapter). Sustainable Landscape Design - Flower Mound

Environmental Designer Heather Venhaus will present “Sustainable Landscape Site Design." Learn simple concepts to create beautiful, healthy home landscapes by following the principles of the Sustainable Sites Initiative (SITES). SITES is a voluntary, national system for sustainable landscapes developed by subject matter experts on soils, water, plants, sustainable materials and human health. This presentation will provide descriptions of solutions any homeowner can put into place in their own landscape to harness Mother Nature’s power to improve soil, clean water, provide natural habitat and create a healthy environment. Earthship Sustainability Seminar - Bastrop

An off-grid Earthship/Monolithic Dome is being built near Bastrop, Texas. Biotechture Training is hosting a two-day Sustainability Seminar Sept. 29-30 at the build site. This is a your chance to see a build in progress while you learn about sustainability. Also, there are internship opportunities for you to participate in and get hands-on experience.
