Dallas community gardens fulfill 'promise' made decade ago

Promise of Peace Gardens, a Dallas nonprofit teaching children the value of nutrition and community, operates gardens in food deserts, providing fresh produce and education. With a population of 7,493, Lucas is small compared to nearby urban hubs like Plano and Dallas. But when it comes to recycling, Lucas is taking some big steps. Thanks to some dedicated volunteers, Lucas is one of the first North Texas cities to have its own styrofoam recycling drop-off.

That's a 180-turn from last year, when the city of Lucas announced it was going to end curbside recycling.

Plants are tucked under closely packed trees, vining skyward, filling raised beds, spreading underfoot, spilling down to the curb – on a street of manicured lawns and pruned shrubs.

There’s not a blade of lawn grass to be found.

This is the 10th year for the online event, which encourages donations to charities in 20 North Texas counties - including dozens of environmental and animal welfare groups.

Inaugural veg fest to be held in OKC

VegFest OKC, Oklahoma City's first vegan festival, will be held on Sept. 8 at Myriad Botanical Gardens. It features plant-based foods, cruelty-free products, fitness classes, and speakers promoting healthy lifestyles. The event aims to highlight Oklahoma's growing acceptance of veganism and improve the state’s health statistics.
